It is worth recommending, depending on the type of production, to pay the Grip for recces. Most often for location shooting and particularly when specialist equipment is required such as camera cranes or car rig/ tracking vehicle use.

Working together with the DoP and Director to achieve shot requirements, ultimately recces could SAVE production time and money by investing in the RIGHT and neccessary equipment for the job. Equipment may be ordered specifically for use on certain days and not unneccesarily kept hold of at potential extra cost.  

Particularly on the shooting day, time and therefore money could be saved by scheduling and planning ahead for equipment access, pre-rigging etc.
